BZ’s Top Five Albums of 2013

Without music, life would be a mistake.
-Nietzsche

I love music. Neurotically so. I don’t love what I’m “supposed” to love, I love what I love.
Since I was thirteen people have been telling me to turn it down. Mostly I don’t.

I’m listening to Neil Young, I gotta turn up the sound
Someone’s always yelling, turn it down

-Bob Dylan, Highlands

So with little explanation and no apology here are my top five albums of 2013…

Print# 1 Trouble Will Find Me ~ The National
The troubadours of sorrow follow up High Violet with another haunting masterpiece. The National put on the best live show I saw this year.

reflektor# 2 Reflektor ~ Arcade Fire
This album might have climbed to number one if I’d had time to fully digest its rich themes. Arcade Fire is easily the most important band of the 2000’s.

like-clockwork-hd# 3 …Like Clockwork ~ Queens of the Stone Age
Follow Josh Homme and his crew down the rabbit hole into a world of macabre beauty. It’s not profound music, but it’s good music. Play it loud.

psychedelic-pill-extralarge_1347668138680# 4 Psychedelic Pill ~ Neil Young and Crazy Horse
I love it when electric Neil rides his grunge horse. The three best songs average over twenty minutes each…which seems about right. Play it super loud.

Unknown# 5 Bob Dylan ~ Another Self Portrait
A reissue of the 1970 Self Portrait — a train wreck of an album. Dylan has hinted that he wrecked it on purpose. This proves that it could have been a gem.

Here’s a favorite track from each album. Enjoy.
